Bikepacking: The Plateau Passage

Temperatures will reach 70° today, with Sunny. Weather conditions this week are expected to range between 55° with Chance Rain to 73° with Sunny over the next 5 days. It doesn't look like there's any substantial snow forecasted this week with air temperatures ranging between 55° - 73° over the next 5 days.

The route starts from the busy and expanding town of St. George which has become the retirement capitol of Utah given its low elevation and relatively mild climate. Leaving town, the route follows a bike path along the Virgin River, then a series of steadily smaller roads heading southeast toward the heart of the Arizona Strip.

Once atop the cliffs, the route heads north, joins the popular Gem Trail singletrack, and crosses the Virgin River at the tiny town of Virgin. After this, the climbing begins! Starting at 3,000 feet, you'll climb until topping out at over 9,000 feet as the route traverse the high plateaus of central Utah. The climb follows the Kolob Terrace Road through the northwestern part of Zion National Park past impressive sandstone cliffs.

After some high-elevation gravel roads, the trail descends quickly to Cedar City. The final part of this segment climbs a paved road nearly 4,000 feet to join the Virgin River Rim singletrack on the southern edge of the Markagunt Plateau. Midway through this trail, you can find Navajo Lake, a small store, a campground, and a lodge.

Weather Forecast

000 FXUS65 KSLC 170420 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 920 PM MST Sat Nov 16 2019 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure aloft will return for early in the upcoming week, followed by a Pacific storm system impacting mainly central and southern Utah midweek. && .SHORT TERM (THROUGH 00Z WEDNESDAY)... High pressure and clear skies in place across the region tonight, with no sensible weather impacts. Ridging builds in Sunday and Monday. Temperatures begin to rebound Monday, except across the more inverted valleys. Southerly flow develops Tuesday in response to falling heights across the region as the cold piece of the anticipated storm drops down the West Coast. Added a chance for precipitation Tuesday afternoon across southern Utah given the trends in the 12Z model suite. QPF will be light during this period, before the arrival of the deeper tropical moisture thereafter. .LONG TERM (AFTER 00Z WEDNESDAY)... With how dry November has may be a shock but a significant storm is expected to impact much of central and southern Utah late Tuesday through at least Friday with widespread precipitation and potential mountain snow accumulations. Several days of ensemble runs (both GEFS and EPS) continue to support the evolution of a long duration period of precipitation across the southern half of Utah. A cut-off upper level low is expected to remain offshore southern California/Baja California through much of the short term period. As upper level ridging shifts eastward, a fairly energetic shortwave trough will dig down the West Coast and finally kick this cut-off low out of the region and into the central Plains Wednesday. This trough will attempt to cut-off across the Southwest as well but the next upstream trough should move into the Pacific Northwest by Thursday, again kicking this trough into the Plains.
