Bikepacking: The Plateau Passage

Temperatures will reach 60° today, with Sunny. Weather conditions this week are expected to range between 55° with Sunny to 69° with Mostly Sunny over the next 5 days. It doesn't look like there's any substantial snow forecasted this week with air temperatures ranging between 55° - 69° over the next 5 days.

The route starts from the busy and expanding town of St. George which has become the retirement capitol of Utah given its low elevation and relatively mild climate. Leaving town, the route follows a bike path along the Virgin River, then a series of steadily smaller roads heading southeast toward the heart of the Arizona Strip.

Once atop the cliffs, the route heads north, joins the popular Gem Trail singletrack, and crosses the Virgin River at the tiny town of Virgin. After this, the climbing begins! Starting at 3,000 feet, you'll climb until topping out at over 9,000 feet as the route traverse the high plateaus of central Utah. The climb follows the Kolob Terrace Road through the northwestern part of Zion National Park past impressive sandstone cliffs.

After some high-elevation gravel roads, the trail descends quickly to Cedar City. The final part of this segment climbs a paved road nearly 4,000 feet to join the Virgin River Rim singletrack on the southern edge of the Markagunt Plateau. Midway through this trail, you can find Navajo Lake, a small store, a campground, and a lodge.

Weather Forecast

000 FXUS65 KSLC 241026 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 326 AM MST Mon Feb 24 2020 .SYNOPSIS...A cold front will continue cross Utah through this morning. High pressure will gradually build into the region through the remainder of the week. && .SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Thursday)...Quite a cold front came through far northern Utah this morning and continues to move across central Utah at the moment. Wind gusts up to 69 mph were reported in the Evanston area, with wind gusts up to 55 mph across the western Salt Lake Valley. Morning satellite analysis shows the main shortwave associated with this front continuing to shift east of the area. This will keep any remaining precipitation threat to the northern mountains and potentially the eastern benches of the Wasatch Front (mainly through this morning). Winds may continue to gust to near 45 mph across Utah County through about 5 AM but are already on the decrease. With the jet and the western periphery of the long wave trough overhead through the day...expect occasional snow showers to continue across the higher terrain of northern Utah. Accumulations are expected to be minimal. Gusty winds can also be expected along the typical downslope areas of the San Rafael Swell and Castle Country but duration precludes the need for a wind advisory at this time. Will monitor through the morning however. Northwest flow will remain across the region through the remainder of the short term forecast as upper level ridging continues to amplify and build eastward. .LONG TERM (After 12Z Thursday)...Nice stretch of days across Utah with a warming trend heading into the weekend. The long term remains unchanged as an upper level ridge will continue to build across the region through the long term period. Ensemble cluster analysis ...
