Weather Forecast

000 FXUS66 KPQR 240510 AAA AFDPQR Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Portland OR 910 PM PST Sun Feb 23 2020 Updated Short Term, Aviation, and Marine sections .SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will cool overnight as the cold air behind the front settles near the surface. Convective showers linger in the post frontal environment. Hazardous sea conditions through the night. High pressure builds Mon through the week. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday...Upper low and cold front which passed across the region earlier today is now well inland. Meanwhile, upper ridging has begun to nose northward offshore. This placed the CWA under a steadily increasing jet core with a 120 knot jet max measured on the 00Z Salem sounding. This jet core enhanced the post frontal low level instability for much of the late afternoon and evening but is now getting shunted to the north. Additionally, it appears modest subsidence is also arriving as the salem sounding also showed a deep very dry later between 10000 and 20000 feet. The residual low level instability will continue to produce showers tonight, but the overall intensity and precipitation amounts are quite limited due to the relatively low "lid" on the vertical potential. As such, will continue to expect light snow shower accumulations tonight and early Monday across our Cascades and also the higher terrain of the Coast Range and Cascade foothills. However, amounts will no longer justify carrying a Winter Weather Advisory. Will just let it expire as planned at 10 PM tonight since the timing is so close. Additionally, incoming seas from the storm are running several feet higher than was previously thought. Will extend the high surf advisory into the early morning hours, as decaying the observed seas from buoy 46005 would suggest the threat of meeting high surf criteria through about 6 AM ...
